Why should I volunteer to host students?

Volunteering to host students in the UGA Intern For A Day program provides a unique opportunity to connect with students and practice relationship-building based recruiting. You will have the ability to raise awareness for your organization’s brand and potential hiring opportunities for students to consider.

What is the process for matching?

Your job shadow opportunity will be available for students to view online and they will submit an application consisting of their resume and 1-2 sentences expressing why they’re interested in your opportunity specifically. You will be contacted when the application window closes. You will then view your applications and rank each student based on how interested you are in hosting them. Once all rankings are submitted, we will run matches through our algorithm to produce the most accurate matches. We will then contact you and the students announcing your match for the semester.

What are the expectations of me if I volunteer to host?

  • Commit to coordinating a job shadow day with the student(s) you are matched with.
  • Be flexible with the student(s) schedules when coordinating the exact date.
  • Communicate with matched students in an appropriate time frame.
  • Set clear expectations for the student prior to the job shadow day.
  • Alert the UGA Intern For A Day program team if you experience any issues with your student(s).

What do the students do during the shadow day?

That is up for you and your team, but we’re here to offer support. If you go to our “Resources” tab you will find example itineraries for full-day, half-day, and virtual shadowing. We also provide a recommended List of Shadow Day Activities.

What should I expect from my student shadowing?

Expect your student to arrive on time, be dressed appropriately, and be prepared to spend the day learning, observing, and asking questions.

Must I consider the student for potential employment opportunities?

No. Students understand this is a voluntary educational opportunity that will benefit their academic and career goals. However, if you are impressed with the student(s), you may inquire about their interest in any available position at your organization. If you wish, you may keep in contact after the job shadow day concludes.

If I volunteer, am I guaranteed a match?

Because many factors go into selection and matching, pairing with a student is not guaranteed. However, to increase your likelihood of being matched we recommend providing as much detail as possible when setting up your profile. Examples of additional detail include providing the shadow day itinerary or having potential shadow dates listed.

Do I have to compensate the student in any way?

No, the UGA Intern For A Day program is a one-day voluntary educational opportunity for students to gain industry insight. Students are expected to provide their own transportation and do not receive academic credit.

What do you do during a shadow day?

Each job shadowing opportunity will be unique to the host. Employers are responsible for coordinating the schedule for your job shadow day. When applying to opportunities carefully read the experience descriptions to learn more on what you can expect if you are matched with that employer. Common job shadow activities include an office tour, shadowing meetings, informational interviews/Q&A, meetings with various departments, and more.

If I apply, am I guaranteed a match?

Because many factors go into selection and matching, pairing with an employer is not guaranteed. However, to increase your likelihood of being matched we recommend using our Statement of Interest Template and Career Center resources to ensure your application is strong. Only apply to opportunities in which you are interested and able to complete. Pay attention to the location and read the descriptions carefully. By applying, you are committing to complete that specific job shadow day should you be matched with that host. It is strongly discouraged to cancel your participation once you have been matched with an employer.

What happens if I am not matched?

Our Intern For A Day program is hosted in both the Fall and Spring semesters. In the event you are unmatched we highly recommend applying the next semester as we may have more employer volunteers able to accommodate everyone.

How can I increase my chances of being matched?

To increase your likelihood of being matched we recommend applying to a variety of opportunities. The more postings you apply to, the greater your chances of being matched. Utilize our Researching Employers & Industry resource to explore companies you may not have considered otherwise.

Do I receive any compensation or guarantee a position with my matched employer?

No, Intern For A Day is a non-credit volunteer experience. You will not receive compensation or reimbursement for travel expenses. You are not guaranteed a full-time role or internship by participating and being matched with an employer. Hiring decisions are made solely by employers and depend on various factors.
