Why should I volunteer to host students?

Volunteering to host students in the UGA Intern For A Day program provides a unique opportunity to connect with students and practice relationship-building based recruiting. You will have the ability to raise awareness for your organization’s brand and potential hiring opportunities for students to consider.

What is the process for matching?

Your job shadow opportunity will be available for students to view online and they will submit an application consisting of their resume and 1-2 sentences expressing why they’re interested in your opportunity specifically. You will be contacted when the application window closes. You will then view your applications and rank each student based on how interested you are in hosting them. Once all rankings are submitted, we will run matches through our algorithm to produce the most accurate matches. We will then contact you and the students announcing your match for the semester.

What are the expectations of me if I volunteer to host?

  • Commit to coordinating a job shadow day with the student(s) you are matched with.
  • Be flexible with the student(s) schedules when coordinating the exact date.
  • Communicate with matched students in an appropriate time frame.
  • Set clear expectations for the student prior to the job shadow day.
  • Alert the UGA Intern For A Day program team if you experience any issues with your student(s).

What do the students do during the shadow day?

That is up for you and your team, but we’re here to offer support. If you go to our “Resources” tab you will find example itineraries for full-day, half-day, and virtual shadowing. We also provide a list of recommended shadow activities.

What should I expect from my student shadowing?

Expect your student to arrive on time, be dressed appropriately, and be prepared to spend the day learning, observing, and asking questions.

Must I consider the student for potential employment opportunities?

No. Students understand this is a voluntary educational opportunity that will benefit their academic and career goals. However, if you are impressed with the student(s), you may inquire about their interest in any available position at your organization. If you wish, you may keep in contact after the job shadow day concludes.

If I volunteer, am I guaranteed a match?

Because many factors go into selection and matching, pairing with a student is not guaranteed. However, to increase your likelihood of being matched we recommend providing as much detail as possible when setting up your profile. Examples of additional detail include providing the shadow day itinerary or having potential shadow dates listed.

Do I have to compensate the student in any way?

No, the UGA Intern For A Day program is a one-day voluntary educational opportunity for students to gain industry insight. Students are expected to provide their own transportation and do not receive academic credit.
